Slate is one of the most difficult materials to work with. Perhaps it is for this reason there are not many sculptors who work with it. This, however, is not the case of Pablo Castelo, a self made artist from La Coruņa, who has been working for six years dedicated to the elaboration of relieves. The enthusiasm of his father for art led to the son imitating him, and, at the age of only 12, using a screwdriver, he started sculpting the tiles of broken slate pieces. Since then, he has investigated and manipulated noble materials such as different types of stones and metals, though with a clear preference for slate.

His profession as a jeweller has allowed him to understand techniques which he has then applied to other materials.

What is striking about his work to people familiar with slate is the variety of textures and polish that he achieves, his technique for this being his secret. The realisation of some of the relieves that we show in these pages have taken him several weeks of effort. He defines himself as an abstract artist, though he also works on realism.

His works are distributed in private collections in different parts of Spain, and in other European countries such as Germany, Portugal and France. He has never been able to exhibit because all his creations have been sold out before they could reach the art galleries.

Possibly for this reason he has decided to make his own web page, as the only way his works can come out of the workshop into the world before ending up in a private collection. He works alone, without assistants.

In www.inicia.es/de/Panchocastelo one can enjoy all the creations of this sculptor of slate, of whom, we are sure, we will hear more in the future.
