Algunos de los mayores proyectos en los que se ha especificado piedra recientemente no han sido hoteles, oficinas o centros comerciales, sino aeropuertos. En todo el mundo, y debido al enorme aumento de los viajes en avión (antes de los atentados del 11 de Septiembre en Estados Unidos), los aeropuertos estaban congestionados y en casi todas partes se están ampliando o renovando. Lo bueno para la industria de la piedra ha sido que, hasta ahora, casi siempre se ha especificado mármol o granito como el material de construcción. Este año las empresas más grandes han estado enviando presupuestos a los principales aeropuertos del mundo, y el próximo año seguirá esta tendencia.
Some of the biggest projects for which natural stone has recently been specified are no longer hotels, office complexes or shopping malls, but airports. All over the world because of the huge increase in air travel (consider the consequences of September 11 to be a short term disruption), airports are becoming congested and almost everywhere they are being expanded or renovated. The good thing for the stone industry is, up to now, granite or marble has almost always been specified as the building material. This year the biggest companies were bidding in several airports in the world, next year the trend will continue.

Estados Unidos fue la gran noticia del año en la industria de la piedra. En los últimos cinco años o más ha sido un mercado fabuloso, con demanda de todo tipo de piedras de todo el mundo. The United States was the big news of the year in the stone industry. For the last five or more years it has been a fabulous market, with demand for all kinds of stones from all over the world. For many stone industries in different countries the development, growth and prosperity depended almost exclusively on their ability to sell in the United States. Its importance becomes obvious not only when it buys, but also when it stops buying.

Too many fairs, has been the common complaint now for the tired travellers within the stone industry, for many years. But they had to be assisted, was also the conclusion many arrived at. But this year, it finally became clear that many professionals had decided it was not always necessary to be present whenever a trade fair is being held - and they stayed away. The number of visitors reduced significantly this year even in the biggest of the fairs. One suspects it is not only because business almost everywhere has declined, but that people have begun questioning seriously the usefulness for so many of them.

One of the biggest complaints one hears from sellers in the stone industry is the lack of guarantees in collecting payments. You usually see them in the quarries - those men with a cap, wearing sunglasses, and a measuring tape in the hand, and, of course, dusty shoes. They are easily distinguished from the rest of the people working in the quarry since they usually come from a different country, far away. That measuring tape is a powerful tool - on it depends huge amounts of money - fortunes! And these people are always treated well, always taken to the best restaurant of the area, their slightest wish is a command. They are - you guessed it - the inspectors of blocks and finished stone, and it is they who decide whether your stockyard will be full of unsold material or how much profits you ultimately make.

There was this ancient ceremony in China which the foreigners had to go through when received by the emperor, and which they found humiliating. A modern version is developing now as the China becomes the biggest buyer of so many types of stones, and many foreigners are not very comfortable about it as they go about trying to sell stone.
