A ALEMANIA / GERMANY
Alemania está mal, habrán oído decir esto casi a todos los hombres de negocios de la industria de la piedra. Que si las exportaciones han descendido (no sólo en Alemania), que si conseguir cobrar está siendo un problema, que si los objetivos no están siendo cumplidos... bueno, es que Alemania está mal.

Germany is in a bad shape, you would have heard this from just about any businessmen in the stone industry. If exports have gone down (not only to Germany), if getting paid has been a problem, if the objectives are not being completed... well, Germany is in a bad shape.

B BURBUJA / BUBBLE
La palabra más corriente, BURBUJA, referida al número récord de construcciones de viviendas en España y al alto precio de las mismas (también es válido para el Reino Unido, Estados Unidos, Australia y algunos más). ¿Existe realmente tal demanda o es especulación? ¿Cuáles serán las consecuencias en los precios de una fuerte caída de la demanda de la construcción nueva, si hay una burbuja inmobiliaria por explotar? Éstas no son sólo cuestiones teóricas, pueden llegar a definir la industria del país para el resto de la década.

The most common word, BUBBLE, when referring to the record number of new housing construction in Spain and the high prices of it (also valid for U.K., USA, Australia, and some more). Is there a real demand or just speculation? What are the consequences of a sharp drop in demand, in prices-is there a property bubble about to explode? These are not theoretical questions-they will define the industry in the country for the rest of this decade.

C CHINA
Es la palabra que más miedo infunde a la mayoría de los hombres de negocios. Pero para algunos también representa un fabuloso e infinito mercado. Para otros significa una oportunidad fantástica de comprar piedra barata y hacer un buen negocio.

¿Cuál es el tipo de cambio respecto al dólar? No importa cuál sea la moneda del país del empresario, pero si hay una cosa que saben todas las mañanas, es el tipo de cambio del día respecto al dólar.

J JARDÍN / GARDEN
Siempre que hay un encuentro para promover la piedra, se centra en cómo usar más material en la entrada, en la cocina, en el cuarto de baño, en los edificios de oficinas. ¿Qué pasa con el jardín? ¿Es que acaso no existe un vasto mercado para la piedra en las diferentes aplicaciones que puede tener en un jardín?

Whenever there is a meeting on promoting stone, the talk is how to use more of it in the entrance, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in the office buildings. What about the garden? Is there not a huge market for using stone in different applications in the garden also?

K K.O. / KNOCK OUT
Las crisis económicas, cuando son severas, como ha sido el caso en muchos países este año, tienen unos efectos devastadores, dejan K.O., fuera de combate, a un gran número de pequeños talleres y fábricas. Miren lo que pasó en los países de Extremo Oriente hace cinco años, y lo que le ha estado ocurriendo este año a la industria de la piedra en algunos países europeos.

Economic crises, when severe, as has been the case in so many countries this year, have one devastating effect- they KNOCK OUT a huge number of small workshops and factories. Look what happened in the Far East countries five years ago, and what has been occurring in the stone industry in some European countries this year.

L LIBRE / FREE
Cuando los taxis están LIBRES buscando pasajeros, tienen puesta la luz verde (o roja, dependiendo del país). ¿No se podría hacer algo similar en la industria de la piedra? Quizás se podría poner una gran luz verde a la entrada del taller o de la fábrica que sugiera que se están buscando pedidos.

When the taxis are FREE and looking for passengers, they put on the green sign (or red, depending on the country). Should not there be something similar in the stone industry - maybe a huge green illuminating sign outside the workshop or factory suggesting-Orders Wanted?

M MÁRGENES / MARGINS
Es la palabra de uso más frecuente en la industria de la piedra, independientemente de que las cosas vayan bien o mal. Los precios actuales no dejan MARGEN, todos lo dicen.

The word used most often in the stone industry, irrespective of whether things are good or bad. There is no MARGIN left at current prices, they all say it.

N NATURAL
La palabra "NATURAL" bien puede ser el mayor bloqueo mental de la industria de la piedra. Como nos hemos convencido a nosotros mismos de que como la piedra es un producto NATURAL, y cualquier cosa NATURAL es, obviamente, superior a cualquier cosa artificial, y esto es evidente para todos, hay una tendencia psicológica a menospreciar la necesidad de comercializar y promocionar la piedra como cualquier otro producto.

The word "NATURAL" may well be the biggest mental block of the stone industry. Because we have so convinced ourselves that stone being a NATURAL product, and everything NATURAL is so obviously superior to anything artificial, and this will be self-evident to all, there is a psychological tendency to underestimate the need for marketing and promoting stone just like any other product.

Algunos compradores de piedra parecen creer que es posible extraer siempre piedra de calidad perfecta, dar los precios más bajos posible, aun más que los de las baldosas de cerámica, enviar contenedores de piedra por barco que viaje a la velocidad de un avión de propulsión y conseguir términos de pago comparable a los de la hipoteca de la casa, tan solo es cuestión de mejorar la organización de la compañía. ¡Menuda QUIMERA!

Some buyers of stone seem to think that extracting stone always of perfect quality from the quarries, giving the lowest possible price which are cheaper than ceramic tiles, sending containers of stone by ship which travel at the speed of a jet plane, payment terms comparable to that of a housing mortgage, are all possible, they are only a matter of organising the company well. Some ILLUSION!

¿Quién habría pensado que un virus podría afectar seriamente al comercio en la industria de la piedra? Esto es exactamente lo que ha pasado. Durante tres meses, contando desde abril, se amontonaban los bloques en las canteras de todo el mundo debido a que los inspectores chinos de bloques no podían viajar por culpa del virus del SARS.

Who would have ever thought that a virus could actually seriously affect trade in the stone industry? That is exactly what happened. During 3 months beginning in April, blocks piled up in several quarries all over the world simply because the Chinese block inspectors were unable to travel due to the SARS virus.

En lo que a esto se refiere, la industria de la piedra ha avanzado, ahora casi todas las empresas tienen página de Internet. Pero la mayoría no se da cuenta que esto, por sí solo, no es suficiente. Cómo promocionarla, cómo hacer de ella una herramienta útil de trabajo, es todavía poco entendido.
In one respect the stone industry has advanced, just about any company now has a website on the Internet. But most still have not understood this is not enough, how to promote it, how to make it a useful business tool, is still poorly understood.

Es el lugar a donde todos van, los importadores de piedra, y los vendedores también. A veces discretamente, sin que nadie los vea, aquí es donde ellos creen que encontrarán piedra a una fracción del precio que encontrarían en cualquier otro lugar del mundo.
